Commander DPHC visits HQ BFG Health Service

Commander Defence Primary Healthcare (DPHC), Surgeon Commodore Paul Hughes, visited the HQ British Forces Germany Health Service (BFGHS) from July 10-12. He was accompanied by his COS HQ DPHC, Lt Col Andrew Cockhill.

The main reason for the visit was for him to attend the bi-annual Health Owners Board, chaired by Commander BFG.

Responsibility for ensuring the provision of appropriate healthcare in BFG and EJSU ultimately rests with Comd DPHC.

Healthcare describes the delivery of medical and related services and is concerned with restoring Service personnel to full fitness and providing appropriate advice and treatment to dependants and entitled civilians.

During the visit Surg Cdre Hughes and Lt Col Cockhill took the opportunity to attend various site meetings with representatives of SSAFA GSTT Care LLP.

These meetings provided the Commander DPHC with greater insight into the role of the LLP in delivering healthcare in Germany.

It also enabled the Clinical Director BFGHS and his staff to brief him on how BFGHS works in partnership with the LLP to meet the needs of the Germany community.

Surg Cdre Hughes then visited the Gilead Hospital, Central Pharmacy and Central Records and met many of the German and LLP medical staff who are instrumental to the delivery of the service.

Before departing on July 12 the Commander addressed all HQ BFGHS personnel in Lake House over an informal cup of coffee and a slice of cake.

Surg Cdre Hughes offered an update on DPHC and looked forward to BFGHS’ part in Germany closure, thanking them for their work so far.

He also took the time to present Gina Harvey with a Commendation for her dedication, single-minded determination and selfless commitment throughout a challenging period of drawdown and rebasing.

Gina, for once, was speechless and appeared very grateful to be recognised in this way.
