Court up in Paderborn

The Ahorn-Sportpark in Paderborn recently held the champions league equivalent of squash.
The European Squash Club Championships is an annual competition held over the course of four days, and this year the Ahorn-Sportpark – home to Paderborner SC – was the venue chosen to host the event.
There were 14 nations represented at the event, with a total of 13 men’s teams and nine women’s competing over the four-day period.
The top ranked men’s team was the home side Paderborner SC while the highest women’s seeding was Mulhouse from France.
The UK contingent was strong, with four teams – two from England and two from Scotland – representing the home nations.
Both Scotland and England were drawn into the same group for the group stages and came up against each other on the first day of the competition and England won the game 4-0.
As the tournament progressed the teams were separated into separate play-offs in respect to their final position in their groups.
The ladies team from Edgebaston beat the Scottish ladies 2-1 before beating the host and third seeds Paderborner SC by the same score line in the final.
In the men’s draw the English team beat the Irish Fitzwilliam team 4-0 before crashing out in the semi-finals to Paderborner SC, while the Scottish men lost in the first knockout round to the second Germany team playing in the tournament – Sportwerk Hamburg.
The winners of the women’s competition were Edgbaston Priory Club, with the Newlands team from Scotland finishing fourth. In the men’s competition Mulhouse took the crown, with the English team coming in fourth and the Scots finishing fifth overall.
In the build-up to the tournament the Lord Mayor of Paderborn, Michael Dreier, said: “The Ahorn-Sportpark will once again take centre stage of international squash. I would like to welcome all players, coaches, officials and everyone in the audience in our city on the Pader river. The city of Paderborn is delighted to host such an important sporting event.”
“I wish all sportsmen and sportswomen a successful tournament and all guests thrilling entertainment during the certainty interesting matches.”
One thing was for sure, the matches were very thrilling, entertaining and interesting, the whole event was, a success and the whole squash community was very welcoming to newcomers to the event.
