Ref’s Recognition

Recently Sgt Craig Jinks refereed his last match within BFG when he took to the field for the football league final on Normandy Barracks.
Sgt Craig Jinks qualified as a football referee with the Army FA in 2001 and has been a relentless supporter of the them ever since.
After his last game in charge of a match in Germany Jinks said: “I will miss football here in Germany, I love it, but I will continue in the UK.
“Back in the UK my intention is to try and progress up the football league ladder and go up to a level four, which I am already in the process of doing,” proof he is as dedicated as ever.
Sgt Jinks was awarded the Dobson’s Trophy at the recent Army Football referees dinner. The Dobson’s Trophy is awarded each year to the referee considered by the members of the Army FA Referees’ Committee to have made the most significant contribution to Army football in the season.
In a citation from Maj G Burton he said of Sgt Jinks: “Without his unstinting support BFG football would have suffered, instead we all have seen first-hand the commitment Craig has given to ensure this small corner of Army football thrives.
“Lt Col S Cross, BA(G) Football Chairman, has nothing but praise for his work and commitment to football in Germany. His attention to detail and commitment to ensure all games – a total of 38 over the course of the season – have been covered with just a pool of six referees is testament to his efforts.
“Not only has he been the Refereeing Chairman, Secretary, Appointments Secretary and Observer/Mentor coordinator, he has actively sought to run basic referee courses in Germany to keep alive interest in refereeing, reluctantly turned down due to low numbers.”
Secretary for BA(G) football Lt Col Steve Cross RE was also full of praise for Sgt Jinks: “He carries out his responsibilities in an enthusiastic, passionate and extremely capable manner, ensuring that the requirements for referees are met across BFG, all with a limited number of qualified and somewhat junior cohort of referees.
“He gives a great deal of his time to the referees, offering his professional advice and guidance in order to improve their personal professional development and understanding of their roles as referees.
“He actively encourages individual across BFG to take an interest in becoming a football referee and is constantly promoting the Army FA sponsored referee courses across all units in order to attract new people.
“Sgt Jinks is an extremely well respected and regarded individual across the BFG football fraternity, who has contributed enormously to BA(G) football during his tenure. Without individuals such as him, BA(G) football would simply not be possible and he is a credit to his unit, BFG and to the Army.”
